"The work of an advertising agency is warmly and immediately human. It deals with human needs, wants, dreams and hopes. Its 'product' cannot be turned out on an assembly line."
[ Leo Burnett ]
Even though the Temple Advertising Department is a youthful four years old, it is hardly lacking the wisdom, professionalism and experience of our 120-year old university. Up until four years ago, the Advertising Department was a sequence, an entity of the Journalism Department. Since breaking away, it has grown way past expectation, establishing a new curriculum with better developed and more advanced courses.
Between faculty members who have been part of the department since it was “a twinkle in our eyes” (over 20 years), and adjuncts who currently work in the advertising industry, the Advertising Department is fortunate enough to blend professors who have the wisdom of age with instructors who have the enthusiasm and freshness of youth.
“Unique” is certainly a fitting word to describe the personality of the Advertising Department here at Temple. Our students are vibrant, energetic and eager to learn and create. Our instructors are casual, yet serious when it comes to their students and what they want them to learn. At the drop of a hat, our instructors are more than willing to serve as mentors for our students and guide them to success in the “real” world.
Compared to programs at other universities, our department is unique in offering specialized, in-depth study. Following tracks such as management and copywriting, students focus in particular on what interests them most. In addition to allowing students to hone their interests, our instructors bring real world experiences into the classroom, giving students a better understanding of the advertising industry today.
Letter from the Chair
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF UNDERGRADUATE ADVERTISING EDUCATION.
Our stand-alone department was launched in 2004. To date, we have over 400 majors.
We’re big on the importance of advertising to society. We’re even bigger on teaching students how to make, sell, and place advertising in today’s ever-evolving media universe.
To that end, we’ve structured the curriculum to offer advanced courses in professional tracks that mirror positions found in ad agencies: copywriting, art direction, media planning, account management, and research.
Our full-time faculty offers a rich background in academic research, along with years of professional, hands-on experience. And they really love to teach!
So do our part-time instructors. After putting in a full day’s work at one of Philadelphia’s advertising agencies, they bring fresh knowledge to the classroom.
