M&C alum Rick Popp wins 2013 AJHA Book of the Year Award

M&C alumnus Rick Popp has won the 2013 Book of the Year Award from the American Journalism Historians Association, recognizing the best new book in the country about journalism and mass communication history. Rick’s book is The Holiday Makers: Magazines, Advertising and Mass Tourism in Postwar America (Louisiana State University Press, 2012). An earlier version of this work also won AJHA’s Best Doctoral Dissertation prize in 2009. Rick is an assistant professor in the Department of Journalism, Advertising and Media Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and will receive the award and speak about his book at the AJHA conference in New Orleans in September.

Professor Kitch’s article named as a Top 50 classic

Professor Carolyn Kitch’s 1997 article, “Changing theoretical perspectives on women’s media images: The emergence of patterns in a new area of historical scholarship,” has been named as one of the top 50 classic articles published in Journalism Quarterly/Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly as part of AEJMC’s centennial celebration. Melissa Meade successfully defends dissertation proposal

Melissa Meade, who previously passed her preliminary examinations, on April 30, 2013 successfully defended her dissertation proposal. The title of the dissertation is “The Shadow of ‘King Coal’ Ethnic relations, Communication and Violence in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania.” The members of her dissertation advisory committee are Nancy Morris (Chair), Patrick Murphy, Carolyn Kitch and Judith Goode (Anthropology).

Persheng Sadegh-Vaziri successfully defends dissertation proposal

Persheng Sadegh-Vaziri, who previously passed her preliminary examinations, on May 1, 2013 successfully defended her dissertation proposal. The title of the dissertation is “Iranian Documentary Film Culture After the 1979 Revolution.” The members of her dissertation advisory committee are Patrick Murphy (Chair), Roderick Coover (Film & Media Arts), Naomi Schiller (Anthropology) and Hamid Naficy (Northwestern University).

Senior M&C students to present their dissertation project April 24 and May 2, 2013

The Media & Communication (M&C) doctoral program invites you to attend one or both of two upcoming sets of presentations of dissertation projects by our senior students.

The presentations (details below) will be on Wednesday April 24 and Thursday May 2 from 10 a.m. to noon in the M&C/SMC research space, the M.I.N.D. Lab, which is located in Annenberg Hall room 1H (diagonally across the hall from the SMC IT office).

M&C student Linda Greenwood successfully defends dissertation proposal

M&C student Linda Greenwood, who previously passed her preliminary examinations, on April 4, 2013 successfully defended her dissertation proposal. The title of the dissertation is “Stimulating an Interest in a Political Topic and Facilitating Deep Comprehension of a Political Text for Young Voters: Does Embodiment Matter?” The members of her dissertation advisory committee are Matthew Lombard (Chair), Undrahbuyan Baasanjav, and Michael Maynard.
