M&C Student Maria Cipollone Publishes Article and Joins Zynga

Congratulations to M&C student Maria Cipollone, who has accepted a position at Zynga and will move to San Francisco, California on April 2.

In other news, Maria’s article titled “Minecraft as a Creative Tool: A Case Study,” with Catherine C. Schifter (College of Education) and Rick A. Moffat (Computer Services) will be published in the July 2014 issue of the International Journal of Game-Based Learning.

Prof. Fabienne Darling-Wolf Publishes Collection of International Media Chapters

Congratulations to Professor Fabienne Darling-Wolf, editor of the 2014 book The International Encyclopedia of Media Studies: Research Methods in Media Studies, Volume 7 published by Wiley. Fabienne also wrote one of the chapters in the book (“Convergence, Globalization, Technological Development, and Interdisciplinarity in a Fast-Evolving World: The Formidable Question of Method”), as did Professor Matthew Lombard (“Lessons Learned from a Research Saga: An Ambitious Content Analysis of Television Form”) and M&C alums Suman Mishra (“Doing Survey Research in Media Studies”), Richard Popp (“Cultural History and Media Studies”) and Sue Robinson (“The Interview: A Process of Qualitative Inquiry”). Congratulations to M&C student Jennifer Midberry, who has had two papers accepted for presentation at the 2014 conference of the International Communication Association (ICA) May 22-26 in Seattle. The papers are “Graphic News Images and Audience Reactions: Empathy, Distress and Prosocial Behavior” and “The Only Image I Ever See: Media Consumers’ Perceptions of Iraqis, Muslims, Arabs and Middle Easterners.”

Congratulations to Professor Brooke Duffy, whose book, “Remake, Remodel: Women’s Magazines in the Digital Age,” is now officially in print; details are here.

Brooke also recently presented the 2013 Social Thought Program Lecture in Communications at Pennsylvania State University. The title of her talk was, “The Romance of Work: Gender and Aspirational Labor in Contemporary Culture Industries”; more information is available here.
