M&C Student Sam Srauy Defends Dissertation

Congratulations to M&C student Sam Srauy, who successfully defended his dissertation on April 10, 2014. The title of his dissertation is “Speaking About Race: Biopower and Racism in the Videogame Landscape.” The members of his dissertation examination committee were Jan Fernback (Chair), Nancy Morris, Hector Postigo, and Casey O’Donnell (Michigan State University; outside reader).

M&C Alum Paul D’Angelo Publishes Article(s)

Congratulations to Paul D’Angelo (M&C, 2002), Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at The College of New Jersey. Paul is the lead co-author of “Framing of AIDS in Africa: Press-state relations, HIV-AIDS news, and journalistic advocacy in four sub-Saharan Anglophone newspapers,” published in Politics and the Life Sciences (2013, vol. 33, no. 2). Also, Paul has two co-authored articles in press: “Metacoverage and mediatization in U.S. presidential elections: A theoretical model and qualitative case study” will be published in Journalism Practice (2014, vol. 8, no. 4), and a book chapter entitled “Mediatization of campaign coverage: Metacoverage of U.S. elections” will be published in a volume called Mediatization of politics: Understanding the transformation of Western democracies (edited by Frank Esser and Jesper Stronback; Basingstroke: Palgrave Macmillan). Finally, Paul will be presenting a co-authored paper at the upcoming International Communication Association (ICA) conference in Seattle entitled “Crisis, credibility, and the press: A priming model of news evaluation.”

M&C Student Carrie Teresa Defends Dissertation

Congratulations to M&C student Carrie Teresa, who successfully defended her dissertation on April 9, 2014. The title of her dissertation is “Looking at the Stars: The Black Press, African American Celebrity Culture and Critical Citizenship in Early Twentieth Century America, 1895-1935.” The members of her dissertation examination committee were Carolyn Kitch (Dissertation Chair), Andrew Mendelson, Susan Jacobson (Florida International University), and Linn Washington (Department of Journalism; outside reader).

M&C Student Chiaoning Su Awarded Fellowship

Congratulations to M&C student Chiaoning Su, who has been awarded a Dissertation Completion Grant for fall 2014 by the University Fellowship Committee of the Graduate Board of Temple University. The award is a $10,000 stipend with no teaching or other obligation and is intended to allow doctoral candidates to devote full-time effort on the completion of their degree.

M&C Student Angela Cirucci Accepted to Oxford’s 2014 Doctoral Programme

Congratulations to M&C student Angela Cirucci, who was recently awarded a place in the Oxford Internet Institute’s 2014 Summer Doctoral Programme. Angela will spend two weeks at the University of Oxford working with the Internet Institute’s faculty and presenting her dissertation research. More information is available here.

Prof. Donnalyn Pompper Publishes Article

Congratulations to Professor Donnalyn Pompper on the publication of the article “Assessing Instrumentality of Mission Statements and Social-financial Performance links: Corporate Social Responsibility as Context,” on which she is second author with Taejin Jung of SUNY Oswego, in the International Journal of Strategic Communication. M&C Student Maria Cipollone Publishes Article and Joins Zynga

Congratulations to M&C student Maria Cipollone, who has accepted a position at Zynga and will move to San Francisco, California on April 2.

In other news, Maria’s article titled “Minecraft as a Creative Tool: A Case Study,” with Catherine C. Schifter (College of Education) and Rick A. Moffat (Computer Services) will be published in the July 2014 issue of the International Journal of Game-Based Learning.

Prof. Fabienne Darling-Wolf Publishes Collection of International Media Chapters

Congratulations to Professor Fabienne Darling-Wolf, editor of the 2014 book The International Encyclopedia of Media Studies: Research Methods in Media Studies, Volume 7 published by Wiley. Fabienne also wrote one of the chapters in the book (“Convergence, Globalization, Technological Development, and Interdisciplinarity in a Fast-Evolving World: The Formidable Question of Method”), as did Professor Matthew Lombard (“Lessons Learned from a Research Saga: An Ambitious Content Analysis of Television Form”) and M&C alums Suman Mishra (“Doing Survey Research in Media Studies”), Richard Popp (“Cultural History and Media Studies”) and Sue Robinson (“The Interview: A Process of Qualitative Inquiry”).
