‘Voice of 76ers’ to speak at SMC winter graduation

The graduates also will hear from Journalism major Sarah Higgins during the ceremony.

Marc Zumoff, RTF ’92

The voice of the Philadelphia 76ers will be the keynote speaker at the School of Media and Communication’s winter graduation ceremony Feb. 1 in the Temple Performing Arts Center.

Marc Zumoff, RTF ’92, who has provided play-by-play for the past 19 years on Comcast SportsNet, has grasped the opportunity to give back to Temple by helping to send off our graduates into the next phase of their lives.

A 14-time winner of the Mid-Atlantic region’s Emmy Award for best play-by-play announcer, Zumoff says he will speak about how Temple helped develop his career – back to his broadcast performance class taught by Bob Bradley. He is currently co-authoring a textbook for Focal Press entitled Total Sportscasting: performance, production and career development.

In addition to Zumoff, the graduates will hear from one of their own – Journalism major Sarah Higgins.

Sarah Higgins, JOUR ’13

Higgins admits to having her eyes firmly set on another area college, but after her father convinced her to visit Temple for a tour, she waivered. And after learning more about the journalism program, she made sure her mom came with her to an Experience Temple Day.

“I loved the thought of having the city and all of its resources around me,” she says.

While she has not yet landed her first job in journalism in the few short weeks since her last final exam, Higgins is sure that her experiences at Temple in the classroom and out will soon make her dream of working as a sports writer a reality. Through three internships — at a golf magazine in London, the Team USA Olympic headquarters and the Philadelphia Union — Higgins says she not only acquired vital hands-on experience, but confidence in her talents.

“They trusted me to go in there and put my journalism experience to work,” she says.

Higgins says her love of sports goes beyond the box scores; it’s about the souls of the athletes and the spirit of the fans.

“There’s something about sports that brings everyone together,” she says.
