MSP graduate to present at Billboard Music Awards

For one School of Media and Communication senior, Thursday’s graduation ceremony may not be the biggest moment of the week.

Just three days later, Shaniece Cole, a media studies and production major, will appear on stage at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas next to Cee Lo Green to present the Milestone Award, a new award that is voted on by fans, to either Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift or Bruno Mars.

If that weren’t enough, Cole heads to Los Angeles on Wednesday to start her new job as a communications assistant at VH1.

Jennings Scholarship enables MSP student to pursue TV internship

Levi Schenk is hard at work to make his dreams of working in the television industry a reality.

A junior Media Studies and Production major, Schenk has always been attracted to sales. In seventh grade, he headed an entrepreneurial operation selling candy on the school bus. Former CBS executive Jim McKairnes named Verizon Chair in Global Broadband and Telecommunications

Television producer and consultant Jim McKairnes has been named the Verizon Chair in Global Broadband and Telecommunications at Temple University’s School of Media and Communication.

McKairnes, who graduated from Temple in 1982 with a journalism degree, is a 23-year veteran of the television industry, including 15 years at CBS.

As the Verizon Chair, McKairnes will host the Verizon Symposium on Global Broadband and Telecommunications in spring 2014. Also, he will teach two classes each semester in the 2013-14 academic year, conduct independent studies and serve as consultant to the Department of Media Studies and Production internship director to help foster … Read more »

Media Studies and Production Dept. honors top student work

 

NBC 10′s Jillian Mele hosted the Department of Media Studies and Production’s annual awards ceremony May 8 in Annenberg Hall.

Out of hundreds of entries, certificates were awarded to the top three projects in 14 categories, with the top students walking away with gift cards. Categories included Best Music Production, Best Sports Package, Best Research Paper, Best Critical Video and more.

TUTV’s ‘Before I Graduate’ hits the big screen

Philly In Focus, a multimedia platform dedicated to connecting the Philadelphia community through the video and interactive media of its groups, institutions and programs affiliated with Comcast, selected a TUTV, Temple University Television, video special to feature on its website.

The video was a part of TUTV’s “Before I Graduate” (BIG) series, which gave Temple students the chance to accomplish their Temple Made goals. Jessica Savitch scholarship winners honored

 

Since 1989, the Jessica Savitch Broadcast Journalism Scholarship has supported the education of young women at Temple who are working toward a career in front of the camera.

Named after a popular Philadelphia broadcaster who passed in a tragic accident in 1983, the scholarship is awarded to students with an interest in broadcast journalism who have a financial need.

At a May 1 lunch, some of the recent recipients of the scholarship were able to thank Savitch’s sister, Lori Savitch.

MSP major named PNC Female Student-Athlete of the Year

Katie Briglia, a senior in the Department of Media Studies and Production, was named the PNC Female Student-Athlete of the Year at the 11th annual Temple University Breakfast of Champions April 24.

The field hockey star was one of more than 300 student-athletes who were recognized for academic and athletic accomplishments. Her male counterpart was Alex Tighe of the College of Science and Technology.

MSP major hosts original game show on TUTV

Brian Schwartz, 30, a senior Media Studies and Production major at Temple University’s School of Media and Communication, has been a huge fan of game shows since he was a kid. And this year, he’s had the chance to fulfill his lifelong dream of hosting his own.

Schwartz created “Tell All,” a show that challenges contestants to match a list of words that relate to a specific subject before the buzzer sounds. The winner, of course, leaves with a fabulous bonus prize.

Prof. Vacker discusses books on Wisconsin Public Radio

Barry Vacker, associate professor of media studies and production, has recently appeared on Wisconsin Public Radio’s “To The Best of our Knowledge,” a nationally syndicated show that airs in 180 markets.

On Feb. 24, Vacker discussed his book, “Slugging Nothing: Fighting the Future in Fight Club.”

Class learns keys to storytelling from NBC reporter

For longtime NBC News correspondent Bob Dotson, great journalism isn’t about the five Ws: “Who? What? When? Where? Why?” When Dotson builds a story, it’s all about “Hey! You! See? So?”

It’s a technique the multiple Emmy winner shared April 9 with Prof. Peter Jaroff’s “Broadcast Production Practicum” class in Temple University’s School of Media and Communication.

Dotson was in Philadelphia to be the special guest at the third annual Kal and Lucille Rudman Media Seminar, an event designed to help students, educators and professionals explore key issues and meet the people who shape contemporary media.
