Temple University’s School of Media and Communication is gearing up to host the next cycle of the semi-annual Beyond 2013 competition May 2. Over the course of the semester, teams of students enrolled in “Introduction to Media and Society” advertising class have been creating concepts for various media innovations, demonstrating what they believe to be the next step for 2013 and more. The contestants, voted to the final round by their peers, will present their innovations before a professional panel of judges at Temple’s Kiva Auditorium. From 2-3:30 p.m., three teams will compete to see which has the true vision of success.
The “Beyond” competition is a concept invented by Professor James Marra. The project originated 12 years ago as a way to give students a challenging yet educational experience to prepare them for the working world. The student competition is helping young professionals not only stock their portfolios with quality work, but also receive internships and jobs as a result of their efforts. Between teams, Blue Print Philly, The Admirals, the Smarty Pants, DART and CW Advertising, anyone could win the title for best media innovation.
The “Beyond” competition has helped many students with professional experience, but it has also aided in the creation of a familiar Temple news outlet: WHIP Radio. Originally a Beyond project concept, WHIP Radio is now a successful, student-run radio station.
“The innovations have to be marketable,” explains Marra. “These students are trying to fill a gap in the competitive marketplace, and the possibilities are far reaching. This isn’t pretend– this is as real as it gets.”
