Journalism student, alumni win Mid-Atlantic Emmys

Lauren Hertzler, JOUR, accepts her Emmy, which was presented by TUTV’s George Cummings (L). Professor Shenid Bhayhoo (R), the documentary’s executive producer, looks on.

A video documenting the experience of the first group of Temple students in the School of Media and Communication South Africa Study Away Program has earned a journalism student an Emmy.

Lauren Hertzler, a senior from Enola, Pa., was awarded the Mid-Atlantic Emmy for College Student Production—Long Form: Fiction/Non-Fiction Sept. 22.

One of 11 students who traveled to South Africa with Journalism Professor Shenid Bhayroo in the summer of 2011, Hertzler took on the assignment of capturing highlights of the program and telling an in-depth story of the students’ time in South Africa. Bhayhoo wanted the video to help promote the program to other students and to show the Temple community all they accomplished in the pilot program.

“I thought it would be cool, so I jumped right on it,” Hertzler said.

Real journalism, real awards
Her video includes dozens of photographs, as well as one-on-one interviews with the students talking about being immersed in a new culture. Hertzler made sure she focused on the hands-on work experience they were getting.

“It was very important to us that we were out working in the field as real journalists,” she said. “I think that’s the most marketable piece of the whole program.”

Proud of her finished product, which was first posted in April on philadelphianeighborhoods.com, Hertzler never expected any accolades for her work.

“I was so shocked,” she said. “I had no idea that colleges were involved with such a prestigious award.”

Bhayroo, of course, knew otherwise, and submitted her work for Emmy consideration.

“Lauren’s documentary about the South Africa Study Away program stands out because the narration is sincere and heartfelt, the interviews are candid, allowing the piece to reflect students’ experiences as they lived and worked in the new and unfamiliar culture,” said Bhayroo, the executive producer. “Lauren uses a straightforward, yet elegant, narrative structure. Although Lauren’s preferred storytelling format is feature and magazine writing, she understands that clear and expressive writing is crucial in creating a strong and effective visual narrative.”

The Emmy goes to…
One of several Temple students nominated for an Emmy this year, she was the only one who won her category. Hertzler said she was nervous when her category was about to be announced to the point that her legs were shaking when her name appeared on the screen.

“And then they said my name. I just had this rush go through my body. I’ve never won something like this before; I’ve never experienced something like that. I looked up and I felt like I was going to cry,” she said.

A writer at her core, the documentary has opened up a world of new possibilities for Hertzler, chief copy editor of The Temple News, who hopes to be a foreign correspondent.

“The Temple program has given me the opportunity to experiment with all of the different realms of journalism. It’s been really beneficial to me finding out what I want to do. I do really like writing, but you also have to have good writing skills to construct a really good video.”

Asked how she’ll top winning an Emmy as a senior in college, Hertzler didn’t hesitate. “I don’t know. Maybe a Pulitzer?”
