Study Away Soiree!
SMC Study Away hosted the inaugural “Study Away Soiree” on Friday, October 5, 2012 in the Annenberg Hall Atrium during the 2012 Homecoming Weekend festivities. Alums from all programs dating back to the 1970′s gathered to reminisce with former classmates and professors about their SMC Study Away experiences as studying away has been a highlight for many alumni, young and old alike! Check out this video from a Study Away Reunion Event, hosted by SMC Study Away during Homecoming Weekend!
SMC’s own Paul “Starkey” Geissinger(BA ’03 / MA ’05) has made the cover of Philly Weekly in November 2011! The magazine did a story on the burgeoning “dub step” scene in Philly and cite Paul as “the real unsung hero of the scene”! And they also mention his completing his graduate degree in “music production” at SMC and they make special mention of the role that Study Away played in his career development (dub step being a mainly London-based thing). Paul is an alum from the London, Fall 2001 program and participated in the Summer 2013 program as a guest speaker for the program, led by faculty director, Jack Klotz (MSP).
Paul was also recognized abroad in September 2014 when TimeOut London named one of Paul’s tracks one of “The 20 best dubstep tracks ever”! Performing as “Starkey”, he’s #19 on the prestigious list and he’s the only one who they note is American on the list! He was introduced to the UK electronic music scene while participating in the Temple London program in Fall 2001.
Check out this Campus Philly interview with London Spring 2011 alum and SMC Study Away peer advisor alum, Zach Thornbury as he talks about how his time in London has given him a new appreciation for the city of Philadelphia and all it has to offer.
Are you an alum of an SMC Study Away program and deeply impacted by the experience? If so, and you’re interested in being featured on our alumni page, we’d love to hear what you’ve been up to!
Email email@example.com with details of what you’d like us to feature and how your experience study away has led you to where you are today!
SMC Study Away Alumni and Prospective Student Event
On November 17, 2011 SMC Study Away hosted a special reunion event for Study Away alumni and prospective students in the Atrium of Annenberg Hall. Prospective students had the chance to talk to returned students and faculty directors in an informal setting and then view the Emmy-award winning documentary about the study away experience in South Africa by Lauren Hertzler, an alum of the inaugural South Africa Summer 2011 program. Temple Update was there to capture the excitement – check out the video below and be on the lookout for more alumni events each semester!
