Prof. Fine says media ownership can lead to biased sports coverage –

For years, the owners of sports teams have owned the local media outlet, too. John Henry owns the Red Sox and the Boston Globe. The Chicago Tribune purchased the Chicago Cubs more than 30 years ago. And Disney used to own the Angels.

Matt Fine, assistant professor of media studies and production, told these situations could result in media bias, especially since money is involved.

“I think there is always the potential for some bias or slanted coverage when you are writing about a team,” said Fine. “It is not that much of a concern when you have established writers… The problem will be for new journalists who are trying to make a name for themselves. This is their meal ticket. If they feel pressure to write a certain way they will.”
