SMC Aspiring Scholars
The School of Media and Communication (SMC) takes great pride in the scholars who strive to stand out academically in our undergraduate programs, and we make it a priority to support them on their path to continued education and career success. To that end, we welcome incoming freshmen who qualify for the Temple University President’s and Provost’s Scholarships and provide those top students with access to a host of benefits and additional opportunities to pursue a well-rounded educational and professional training experience at SMC.
Collaborate With Graduate Students
The school is currently working with SMC’s Dean of Graduate Studies to create research teams that will pair President’s and Provost’s Scholars with graduate students and supervisory faculty members in collaborative working relationships.
Showcase Scholarly and Creative Work
SMC has plans to create an electronic undergraduate research and creative works journal. Scholars will be groomed to become editors and create featured works for the journal. President’s and Provost’s Scholars are also guaranteed admission into SMC’s annual Temple Undergraduate Research Forum-Creative Works Symposium (TURF-CreWS).
Attend the Lew Klein Awards
SMC aspiring scholars are also welcome to join, meet and connect with SMC guests like Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer at one of SMC’s biggest public events each fall, the Lew Klein Alumni in the Media Awards. The event was named for Lew Klein, a longtime adjunct professor at SMC, an award-winning producer and a true media pioneer.
Showcase Work on TUTV
We work with President’s and Provost’s Scholars to create programming that airs on TUTV, Temple’s cable TV station that broadcasts locally on Comcast and Verizon.
Travel to Conferences
We encourage undergraduate scholars to expose themselves to the work of scholars beyond Temple during their time here. Depending on cost and paper acceptance, funds may be allocated for President’s and Provost’s Scholars to travel to regional and national professional conferences, where they will meet artists, executives, researchers and scholars from across the country and around the world.
The Study Away program offers courses in every SMC major. Along with internships in most locations, you’ll have many exciting opportunities to continue your Temple education and gain diverse learning experiences in various locations across the U.S. and around the globe, including Barcelona, Dublin, Hong Kong, London, New York City and South Africa. President’s and Provost’s Scholars play a vital role in these programs; they visit countries with their peers and create experiences that will certainly be a highlight of their college careers.
Access Top Internships
Because internships allow students to gain practical experience and network with experts in their fields of study, they play a key role in entering the professional world. We are proud to introduce our President’s and Provost’s Scholars to our key contacts in the field of media and communication and showcase them for some of our top internship positions.
We regularly arrange networking events and meetings with our top scholars, some of our school’s deans and accomplished alumni to facilitate the lively exchange of ideas and foster the spirit of collaboration that infuses everything we do in the School of Media and Communication.
